You’ve probably heard the whispers. Or maybe it’s more like loud chatter. Something’s coming. And it’s going to completely change the way you run payroll.
Payday Super. Like it, loathe it… it’s coming either way. From 1 July 2026, super and wages go hand in hand.
Now, there’s no need to panic. At Cole School Experts, we actually believe this will be a good thing for your operations. The key is getting really, really comfortable with what’s changing, and what it’ll mean for your team going forward.
After that? It’s just process. And like any good process, once it’s set up properly, it just works. Here’s everything you need to know to get up close and personal with Payday Super so that you’re prepped and ready for the big change.
Back up a second. What’s actually changing?
Right now, most schools pay staff super either monthly or quarterly. Basically, it’s something you batch up and deal with later. That’s what’s going away.
From 1 July 2026:
- Super must be paid on or before each payday
- It needs to run in sync with payroll, including any out-of-cycle pays
- Monthly or quarterly catch-ups won’t cut it anymore
- Monthly payrolls can still pay monthly; however, if out-of-cycle pays (including new starters, terminations, or “catch-up pays”) are processed, superannuation will now need to be paid at the same time
You said this is a good thing. Sounds like more work to me!
You’re right. Sort of. It’ll be one more thing you need to look at during every pay run. However, it’s going to have a multitude of benefits for your team, and, ultimately, will be a smoother process in the long run. Here’s why.
Under the current system, if something goes wrong (incorrect fund details, a failed payment, missing information), you might not pick it up for weeks or even months. By the time you realise it, the issue’s bigger, the fix is messier… and someone’s probably a bit frustrated.
Payday Super brings everything forward.
You’ll pick up on issues earlier. Fixes will be much simpler to identify and action. And staff will get what they’re owed sooner. As for your team, it should ultimately mean far fewer headaches and way less scrolling back through payslips to try and figure out what went wrong.
What do we need to do to get ready?
The good news is, you’ve got a bit of time up your sleeve. That means you don’t need to overhaul all your processes overnight. But you do want to get comfortable early.
Our recommendation? Start with a few key checks:
- Is your payroll software ready for Payday Super?
- Can your clearing house handle more frequent payments?
- Do your internal processes support this every pay run?
- Does your cash flow need to be revised to support more frequent payments rather than lump sums?
- Is it clear who looks after what in your team?
The goal isn’t perfection. Not straight away, anyway. It’s knowing your process will hold up when the switch flips.
What if I’d rather not get that close?
You’re not alone. For busy school teams, this is just one more moving piece. One more thing to get right every pay cycle.
If your current process relies on, “we’ll sort that out later”, this change will expose the cracks pretty quickly. Unfortunately, Payday Super doesn’t leave much room for catch-ups.
